CMC Markets is a UK-based financial services company that offers online trading in shares, spread betting, contracts for difference and foreign exchange across world markets. CMC is headquartered in London, with hubs in Sydney and Singapore.


Simon Waugh was the incumbent chairman of CMC Markets APAC (based in Sydney, Australia) and was due to step down as he had been on the board for an number of years (amicable exit). He was trusted to hire his own replacement, and reached out to La Fosse as he had an existing relationship with Jack Denison, Global Head of Executive Search and Interim Management at La Fosse Executive.


Simon had got in touch with us 48 hours before contacting a number of Sydney-based agencies and asked us if this was even something we would look at. We took a fairly short brief on the phone and before being fully engaged, we sourced three strong Australian candidates for the role and sent them over to Simon within 48 hours. He said all three looked great and he and the CEO would like to take them all to interview. Two of the three got through to second and third-round interviews. At final stage, the CMC board decided they wanted to hire one of the candidates, but would also have happily hired the second candidate (who they later reengaged with regarding a NED role at the business).

La Fosse had zero track-record or physical presence in Australia, however through our extensive senior network, we managed to identify, reach and close three strong candidates, two of which they wanted to hire.


The role was filled before any other agencies had a chance to pitch for it. They expected the search to take up to six months. End-to-end, the process took six weeks from brief to placement.
