Head of Engineering

Head of Engineering

Head of Engineering / Essex/ Permanent / Environmental Organisation / Some remote working

Environmental services organisation based in Essex (with flexible working/ work from home) are on the lookout for a Head of Engineering (.NET House) to lead their software development team. This is a technical management role (not a general management role) which will be responsible for the development team, reporting to the CTO.

This is an opportunity for the Head of Engineering to assess how their tech needs to look like over the next 5 years and the growth plans of the business and be a major part of their transformation project.

80% of their technology at the moment is on-premise and they are looking to go to 100% on cloud. In the 80% of applications, a lot are bespoke, but they are now at the point of going in the other direction and they are looking to make significant investments here. This is an exciting task for a Senior person to take part in a huge transformation, migrating applications and overhauling them, migrating to the cloud, putting product-management principals in place etc.

The Head of Engineering will not be expected to do software development themselves but would welcome to do so if they can and would also like to do so.

As the most experienced software development management professional in the business, the primary objective will be to reengineer software development processes and gradually steer the team towards the vision of continuous delivery of high-quality fit-for-purpose systems on a "public cloud first" model.

Additionally, as a senior tech leader, the Head of Engineering will work closely with the ICT Director and the other tech team leaders to help continually fine-tune strategies for practices such as architecture management, project management, availability management, performance and capacity management and service design.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years' experience leading engineering teams of 10+ people

  • Equally comfortable leading the development of web-based, windows thick-client and mobile apps

  • Well-versed in developing for on-premises and public cloud deployments and are intimately familiar with the typical architectures and considerations for both

  • Structured, clear communicator

  • Strong on engineering processes

Tech stacks primarily are C#.NET, Java (Android), Swift (iOS) and NodeJS.

Extensive benefits package including Car allowance (Tesla), 2x Bonuses, Share Options, Gym, Bupa etc.

Click to apply! All interviews over Zoom, remote onboarding but eventually based in Essex.
