Job Purpose

  • The Business Change Director will be accountable for ensuring effective execution of all transition and implementation activity across a complex portfolio of change.
  • The Business Change Director will be accountable for setting out a clear method and approach for managing all transition and implementation activity across the portfolio, one which enables successful adoption of change at scale and pace.
  • Working collaboratively with the Programme Directors and Transformation team, the individual will ensure transition and implementation activity is fully embedded at a programme and portfolio level and will establish effective oversight and controls to ensure success.
  • Accountable for directing a team of business change, communication and engagement professionals at programme and portfolio level to deliver effective business change practices that ensure uptake and adoption.
  • Proactively prepares the business for the impact of the changes, ensuring activities are tailored and planned appropriately so that they are implemented on time and realise the necessary business benefits.

Accountabilities

  • Working to the Director of Transformation, the post holder will have an excellent understanding of the total landscape of transformation across the business and its cumulative impact.
  • Accountable for determining a business change, communication and engagement strategy that will enable maximum adoption and benefits realisation across a complex portfolio comprising of people, process and system change.
  • Ensure transition and implementation activity is embedded consistently within programmes and aggregates at the portfolio level into a coherent and viable plan.
  • Works collaboratively with the Programme Directors and Transformation team to validate the demand for business change capability across the portfolio and if necessary, create the case to onboard additional resources.
  • Lead and direct a team of business change, communication and engagement professionals, ensuring best practice standards, tools and processes are adopted consistently across the portfolio.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with fellow delivery professionals upon whom success is co-dependent. Establish strong relationships Service Directors to ensure successful adoption of change and benefits realisation.
  • Ensure there is a robust and coherent portfolio business change plan, with clear specified outcomes, which is fed and supported by underpinning activity in programmes.
  • Accounts for business change costs, time and budgets and ensures they are reflected adequately in portfolio/programme level budgets.
  • Monitors and controls transition and implementation activity at a strategic level by identifying success criteria and suitable controls against which to evaluate performance and impact
  • Interfaces with senior stakeholders, identifies their interests and ensures they are addressed in order to secure the commitment necessary to progress.
  • Ensures strategic and operational risks and issues are identified, prioritised, assessed and mitigated.
  • Ensures senior stakeholders are briefed, updated and where appropriate, enrolled in the management and control of key risks.
  • Creates an environment for implementation to be successful, collaborates and actively manages dependencies.
  • Coaches, mentors & develops implementation professionals to take responsibility for their performance and personal development.

Person Specification

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience of managing the implementation of complex, organisation wide change at scale and pace, spanning people, systems and process.

  • Excellent track record and strong evidence of visible and effective leadership, building and maintaining stakeholder relationships in a complex and fast paced change environment.

  • Expert skills and knowledge of business change, communication and engagement disciplines, approaches, tools and methodologies and evidence of applying them successfully.
  • Strong demonstration of ability to influence at pace across a range of senior stakeholders with competing views.
  • The ability to recognise, anticipate and effectively deal with existing or potential conflicts at an individual, team or strategic level.
  • Able to recommend how business change resources should be allocated across the portfolio and programmes in order to optimise change adoption and benefits realisation.
  • Expert in risk and issue management, able to assess risks and issues, work with teams to generate and execute effective mitigation and contingency countermeasures.
  • Able to assess situations to determine their importance and urgency and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the portfolio and organisation.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity, can make progressive decisions and set direction without having the full picture, and is able to re-focus as the details emerge.
  • Able to handle conflict constructively, can recognize, anticipate and effectively deal with existing or potential conflicts at an individual, team or strategic level.
  • Emotionally resilient, can adapt to changing circumstances and adverse situations whilst remaining calm and maintaining performance.
