What skills does a DevOps engineer need?

Though DevOps is an emerging discipline and therefore there are no hard-and-fast career trajectories, a common route is to begin as a systems administrator, progress to a junior site reliability engineer / DevOps engineer / platform engineer, before carrying on to Senior DevOps Engineer, Principal / Lead DevOps Engineer, Manager, Head of DevOps / Site Reliability Engineering, Head of Platform Engineering, then Head of Engineering. Entry-level salaries for a Junior DevOps Engineer roughly sit around the 45k mark, with Heads of earning around 120k.

  • 2nd Line Network Support Engineer > £35 – 45k / £250 – £350 per day
  • 3rd Line Network Support Engineer > £45 – 60k / £350 - £450 per day 
  • Network Project Engineer > £55k - £65k / £425 - £525 per day 
  • Network Design Engineer > £65k - £85k / £450 - £550 per day 
  • Senior Network Engineer >  (same as above) 
  • Network Architect > £65k - £90k / £525 - £650
