Today’s Top Jobs for New Graduates

31/05/2017 By Zoe Neilson

Are you fresh out of uni and still fuzzy on your future calling? Don’t worry - your pain is shared by millions of graduates in the same shoes. Stepping out into the professional world after studying can be daunting, especially when you’re faced with so much choice. But we’ve lightened the load with this quick list of some of the best jobs for graduates in 2017, to give you a head start on making your first career move.

Jobs with bright futures

IT Security. Investment in cyber security is set to soar from $75 billion in 2015 to $170 billion by 2020. With the rise of cyber-attacks, the introduction of new government regulations that require companies to have a Chief Information Security Officer, your chances of a) scoring a job and b) having a clear career ladder within IT security are strong.

Accountancy. With Brexit coming into effect, accountants will be needed to advise companies of the financial implications of exiting the EU. A study by the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) showed that almost half of MPs believe Brexit will have a positive impact on the profession.

Jobs with balance

Data Analysts. Digitization is a top priority for companies and they’re desperate for the talent to help them do it well. On top of this, data analytics was rated in the top twenty best jobs for work life balance, according to Glassdoor. So, not only can you look forward to a long career, you can look forward to one with balance too.

Web Developer. According to the same survey, web development scored the highest in work life balance satisfaction. And it’s easy to see why. Being a web developer means creativity, freedom and good financial rewards. Plus, it’s also more flexible than a lot of jobs - with many developers able to work from home.

Jobs with the best financial rewards

High Fliers recently released their Graduate Market Report 2017, which revealed that the highest paid starting salaries were found in investment banking, law firms, and the oil and energy industries. So if you’re chasing paper to pay off some of that dreaded student debt, this is where you should start. But a warning, prepare for longer working hours than most.

Investment Banking
Investment banking is a financially rewarding, exciting and challenging career. You’ll experience long hours, be expected to travel far at a moment’s notice and work in a highly competitive - and demanding - environment. But with a starting salary average of around £48,000, you’re certainly paid for your efforts.

Law
Like investment bankers, commercial lawyers are seriously rewarded for their long hours - especially at prestigious Magic Circle firms that offer starting salaries of around £40,000. Law is a high pressure, fast-paced and demanding career. If you’re looking for work-life balance, steer clear. But if you thrive on that kind of thing and want stability, this could be your calling.
